How to Receive Freelance Payments in Nepal (Without PayPal)
Winning a client abroad is exciting. Then comes the question every Nepali freelancer asks: how do I actually get the money into my bank account?
PayPal doesn't work for receiving money in Nepal, but there are legal, reliable alternatives. This guide explains each one, what it costs and which documents to keep.
Check before you rely on it. Payment services, bank requirements and Nepal Rastra Bank rules change. This guide reflects the general situation in October 2026. Confirm the details with your bank and the payment provider.
The short answer
- Working on Fiverr, Upwork or similar platforms? Withdraw to Payoneer, then from Payoneer to your Nepali bank account in rupees. This is the most common route.
- Working with a direct client abroad? Ask them to pay by bank transfer (SWIFT) to your Nepali bank account, or request the payment through Payoneer.
- Don't use PayPal workarounds, crypto or informal transfers (hundi). They're unreliable at best and illegal at worst.
Option 1: Payoneer
Payoneer is the most widely used option among Nepali freelancers. You can:
- receive withdrawals from freelance marketplaces
- request payments from direct clients
- withdraw your balance to a Nepali bank account, converted to rupees
The name on your Payoneer account must match your bank account and your citizenship certificate or passport. Approval can take time, so open your account before you need it. Our Payoneer guide for Nepal walks you through sign-up and verification.
Option 2: A direct bank transfer to your Nepali bank
A client abroad can send money straight to your bank account with an international transfer. You'll need to give them:
- your full name, exactly as your bank has it
- your account number
- your bank's name, branch address and SWIFT/BIC code (ask your bank for these)
The money arrives in your account in rupees, converted at the bank's rate. A few things to know:
- Fees add up. The client's bank, any banks in between and your bank may each take a fee. On small payments, this can take a big bite.
- Your bank may ask about the payment. Keep an invoice and your agreement with the client ready to show what the money is for.
- Ask your bank first. Some banks have a specific process for receiving payments for IT and digital services from abroad. Ask what they need before the first payment arrives.
Option 3: Withdraw directly from the platform
Each platform offers different withdrawal methods in each country:
- Fiverr: you can withdraw to a Payoneer account, or use Fiverr's bank transfer option, which is powered by Payoneer. See how to withdraw Fiverr earnings in Nepal.
- Upwork: check the Get paid page in your account to see which methods are available in Nepal. Payoneer is commonly used.
- Freelancer.com and others: check the withdrawal settings in your account before you accept a project.
Always check this before you take on work, so you know exactly how you'll be paid.
What about PayPal, Wise, Stripe or crypto?
- PayPal: Nepali freelancers can't receive money into a Nepali PayPal account or withdraw to a Nepali bank. Read is PayPal available in Nepal?
- Wise and Stripe: these services don't offer accounts for receiving money to people living in Nepal in the way they do in many other countries. Check their websites for current availability, and don't use someone else's account.
- Cryptocurrency: banned in Nepal by Nepal Rastra Bank. Don't accept it.
Keep these documents
Good records protect you if your bank asks questions and make your tax return much easier:
- your contracts or written agreements with clients (use the free contract generator)
- invoices for every direct client payment (use the free invoice generator)
- platform earnings statements (Fiverr, Upwork and others let you download them)
- Payoneer transaction history
- bank statements showing the money arriving
Compare the real cost
Every route has costs: platform fees, withdrawal fees and the exchange rate. To compare, enter the numbers in the fee calculator and choose NPR to see what reaches your bank account. Compare the exchange rate you get with Nepal Rastra Bank's published rate for the day, so you know how much the conversion costs you.
Common problems and fixes
- Payoneer application rejected or pending: check that every detail matches your documents exactly, then contact Payoneer support. Don't open a second account.
- Name mismatch: your name must be the same on the platform, Payoneer and your bank account. Fix it before you withdraw.
- Bank transfer returned: usually a wrong SWIFT code, account number or name. Confirm the details with your bank and send them to the client again.
- Bank asks for documents: share your invoice, contract and platform statement. That's exactly why you keep them.
