Freelancer Tax in Nepal: What You Need to Know (2026)
Many new freelancers in Nepal ignore tax until a bank asks questions or a large payment arrives. Understanding the basics early saves stress later, and in some cases can save you money.
This is general information, not tax advice. Nepal's tax rules change with each year's budget and Finance Act, and the right treatment depends on your situation. Confirm everything with the Inland Revenue Department (ird.gov.np) or a qualified tax professional before you file.
Do freelancers in Nepal pay tax?
Yes. Income from freelancing is taxable, including money you earn from clients abroad through Fiverr, Upwork, Payoneer or direct bank transfers. Earning online doesn't make income tax-free.
Step 1: Get a PAN
A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is your tax identity in Nepal. You'll need it to file returns, and banks and clients may ask for it.
You can start the application online through the Inland Revenue Department's taxpayer portal, then complete it as instructed, which usually includes verification at a tax office. Ask the IRD or your local tax office for the current process.
Step 2: Understand how foreign income is treated
Recent budgets in Nepal have included special treatment for individuals who earn foreign currency from IT and digital services. Under the rules for fiscal year 2082/83, tax advisers in Nepal report that:
- Qualifying individuals who earn foreign currency for certain digital and IT services, received through a Nepali bank, can pay a concessional 5% final tax.
- This applies up to an annual income limit, reported as NPR 40 lakh.
- Above the limit, or if your work or payment route doesn't qualify, the normal individual tax slabs apply.
Important caveats:
- Not every freelancer automatically qualifies. It depends on the type of service, how you're paid and how you're registered.
- It depends on official channels. Money that comes through approved routes, such as a Nepali bank, is what counts.
- Withholding may or may not happen automatically. Some banks deduct tax when foreign payments arrive, and some situations require you to declare and pay yourself.
Because these details matter, check the current Finance Act on the IRD website, or ask a tax professional how it applies to you.
Step 3: Bring money in through official channels
How your money arrives affects both the law and your tax:
- Use Payoneer withdrawals to a Nepali bank, or direct bank transfers. See how to receive freelance payments in Nepal.
- Avoid crypto and informal transfers (hundi). They're illegal, and income received that way can't use the official routes described above.
Step 4: Keep good records
Keep these for every fiscal year:
- invoices for direct clients (the free invoice generator helps)
- contracts or written agreements
- platform earnings statements from Fiverr, Upwork and others
- Payoneer transaction history
- bank statements showing the money arriving and the tax deducted, if any
- receipts for work expenses, such as equipment and internet
A simple folder per month on your computer or in Google Drive is enough.
Step 5: File your return on time
Nepal's fiscal year runs from mid-July to mid-July (Shrawan to Ashadh). Income tax returns are normally due within three months after the fiscal year ends, and extensions are sometimes possible. Check the exact deadline on the IRD website each year, because filing late can bring fines and interest.
When to get professional help
Talk to a chartered accountant or tax professional if:
- your income is growing quickly or getting close to the annual limit
- you work with many clients or platforms
- you want to register a business or company
- your bank asks questions you can't answer
- you're not sure whether your work qualifies for special treatment
A one-time consultation usually costs far less than fixing a mistake later.
Set money aside as you earn
Whatever rate applies to you, don't spend everything you receive. Set aside a part of each payment for tax in a separate account. Our guide on budgeting with irregular freelance income shows a simple way to do it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to pay tax if I earn only a little?
Income tax depends on your total income and the rules for that year. Even if you owe little or nothing, keeping records and filing correctly protects you. Ask the IRD or a tax professional about your situation.
Will my bank deduct tax automatically?
Sometimes. It depends on the payment route and the bank. Check your bank statements and ask your bank how it handles foreign income for freelancers.
Is income from Fiverr or Upwork treated differently from direct clients?
The source of the money and how it reaches your bank can affect the treatment. That's another reason to keep separate records for each platform and client.
