Getting started

Can I start freelancing with no money?

Yes. You can learn skills for free, build a portfolio with free tools and find clients on platforms that don't charge you to apply. Our 30-day plan shows how.

Do I need a degree or certificate?

No. Clients care about whether you can do the job. Strong portfolio samples matter far more than certificates.

How long does it take to get my first client?

It varies. Some people win a client in their first week, while for others it takes a few months. Sending tailored proposals every day and improving your samples makes the biggest difference. See how to get your first client.

Can I freelance as a student?

Often yes, but check the rules: most freelance platforms and payment services require you to be at least 18. Start small, so it fits around your studies.

Can I freelance with only a phone?

For some services, yes: writing, social media management, simple design and short video editing. Read can you freelance with only a smartphone?

Platforms

Which platform is best for beginners?

It depends on your skill. Fiverr suits clear, packaged services, while Upwork suits bigger or ongoing projects. Compare them in Fiverr vs Upwork for beginners.

Is Fiverr free?

Joining and publishing gigs is free. Fiverr keeps 20% of each order. Use the Fiverr fee calculator to see what you'll earn.

Is Upwork free?

Joining is free, but sending proposals costs Connects, which you buy. Replying to client invitations doesn't cost Connects. See Upwork Connects explained.

Are there free alternatives to Upwork?

Yes. Many marketplaces, job boards and communities let you apply for free. See 20 freelance websites that are free to join and apply.

Money

How much do beginner freelancers earn?

There's no single answer. It depends on your skill, niche, the quality of your work and where your clients are. Work out a fair minimum with the hourly rate calculator, and read how much to charge as a beginner.

Should I charge hourly or a fixed price?

For small, clear projects, a fixed price is usually easier for both sides. For ongoing or unclear work, hourly is safer. See how to quote a project.

How do I get paid if PayPal doesn't work in my country?

Most freelancers use Payoneer, platform withdrawals or bank transfers. Read how to get paid when PayPal isn't available.

How do freelancers in Nepal get paid?

Usually through Payoneer, then a withdrawal to a Nepali bank account in rupees, or by direct bank transfer. See how to receive freelance payments in Nepal and is PayPal available in Nepal?

Do I have to pay tax on freelance income?

In most countries, yes, including Nepal. Rules differ by country and change often, so check with your tax authority or a professional. In Nepal, read our freelancer tax guide.

Safety

How do I know if a freelance job is a scam?

The biggest red flag is being asked to pay to get work. Others include moving to WhatsApp or Telegram right away, overpayments and requests for your login or codes. See 11 freelance scam red flags.

Can I work with a client outside the platform?

Not if you met them on a marketplace. Most platforms forbid it, and you lose payment protection. Clients you find yourself, through LinkedIn or referrals, are different.

What if a client doesn't pay?

On a marketplace, contact the platform's support or resolution center. With direct clients, send polite reminders, pause work and keep everything in writing. A deposit and a contract prevent most problems. See how to handle difficult clients.
