Upwork Connects Explained: What They Cost and How to Spend Fewer
If you've tried Upwork, you've met Connects: the tokens you spend to apply for jobs. For freelancers starting with little money, they're the biggest obstacle on the platform. Here's how they work, what they really cost, and how to win work while spending as few as possible.
What are Connects?
Connects are Upwork's currency for applying to jobs. Each time you send a proposal, Upwork charges a number of Connects. The number depends on the job, and Upwork shows it before you apply.
You buy Connects from Upwork. As of 2026 they cost $0.15 each, and you can buy them in bundles. Paid plans such as Freelancer Plus include a monthly allowance of Connects.
What a proposal really costs
The price of one proposal looks small, but it adds up quickly:
| Connects per proposal | Cost per proposal | Cost of 20 proposals |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | $0.75 | $15 |
| 10 | $1.50 | $30 |
| 16 | $2.40 | $48 |
Upwork also lets you spend extra Connects to boost a proposal to the top of the client's list. This can help on competitive jobs, but it gets expensive fast. Use it rarely, and only on jobs that fit you perfectly.
The number that matters is your cost per job won. If you send 20 proposals at 10 Connects each to win one $150 project, you spent $30 to win it. Use the Upwork fee calculator to see what's left after Upwork's fee, then subtract your Connects.
Free ways to get work on Upwork
1. Answer invitations
According to Upwork's help center, replying to a client's invitation doesn't cost Connects. Clients send invitations to freelancers whose profiles match their job. This is the best reason to invest in your profile.
2. Build a profile that clients find
- Write a specific title, such as "WordPress Developer for Restaurants" rather than "Web Developer".
- Start your overview with the client's problem, not your life story. The free bio generator helps.
- Add portfolio samples that match the work you want.
- Fill in every section: skills, hourly rate, availability and languages.
Read how to write a freelance profile that wins clients for examples.
3. Sell fixed-price projects
Upwork's Project Catalog lets you list fixed-price services that clients can buy directly, a bit like Fiverr gigs. When a client buys, you don't spend Connects on a proposal.
How to choose jobs worth your Connects
Before you spend a single Connect, check the job:
- Payment verified: the client has added a payment method.
- Hiring history: the client has hired freelancers before and left reasonable reviews.
- Realistic budget: the budget matches the work described.
- Clear description: you understand exactly what's needed.
- Few proposals so far: your proposal is more likely to be read.
- A perfect fit: you've done this kind of work, and you have a sample to show.
If a job fails two or more of these checks, skip it. Saying no to the wrong jobs saves more Connects than any other trick.
Write proposals that win
When you do apply, make every proposal count:
- Start with the client's goal, in their words.
- Share one relevant sample.
- Explain how you'd do the work in two or three steps.
- End with a specific question.
Our guide on writing proposals that get replies has templates, and the free proposal generator gives you a strong first draft.
Is Freelancer Plus worth it?
Freelancer Plus is a paid monthly plan that includes Connects and extra features. It can make sense once you're winning work regularly and your cost per job is clear. For a complete beginner, it's usually better to build your profile, use invitations and try free platforms first.
Track your numbers
Keep a simple spreadsheet with:
- the date and job title
- Connects spent
- whether you got a reply, an interview or the job
- what you earned
After a month, you'll know your cost per client and which kinds of jobs are worth your Connects.
Don't rely on one platform
Upwork can be excellent, but paying to apply is a risk when money is tight. Balance it with free options: compare Fiverr vs Upwork, and browse our list of 20 freelance websites that are free to join and apply.
